Hasan Ali is a medium-fast bowler who bowls with a basic motion and a variety of variations. At the age of 19, he made his first-class debut against Lahore Ravi, taking four wickets in the first innings. His cricket career began in club cricket and progressed to the regional Under-16 level, but he was not selected for national young selections. He did, however, garner some notice during the 2015 National T20 Cup, as he took eight wickets in four matches while captaining Shoaib Malik’s team. In 2016, he got promoted to the Pakistan side after taking 17 wickets at 17.05 in the National One-Day Cup.
Hasan made an easy transition to international cricket, taking two five-fors in his first 15 One-Day Internationals and impressed with his precise lines in his Test debut in Dominica, which coincided with the farewells of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan. No one could have predicted his effect on his first major international event, the 2017 Champions Trophy.
Hasan, like his team, struggled at the start of the tournament, going for 70 in 10 overs in a crushing opening-match loss to India, before regaining form in an unexpectedly dramatic way. He completed the tournament as the leading wicket-taker, with 13 at an average of 14.69 and only 4.29 an over, after taking three wickets in each of Pakistan’s following four matches. Hasan’s consistency in the middle overs was a crucial component in Pakistan’s first global ODI title since the 1992 World Cup, and his Player-of-the-Tournament accolade was well-deserved.
