Fakhar Zaman, who was born in Mardan, where perhaps Pakistan’s best Test batsman, Younis Khan, sets the bar for batsmanship, has been on Pakistan’s harsh local circuit for almost five years with practically little notice. Zaman, a left-handed opener with a strong backlift, relies on timing for his runs, which he has a lot of. His domestic average exemplifies this (42 in first class cricket and 49 in List A). However, it wasn’t until the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in 2016-17 that his talent was recognised. Zaman scored 663 runs at an average of 51 in the competition, including 170 in the final’s second innings.
His spectacular play won him a deal with the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League. He displayed flashes of the quality he’d been exhibiting at home, notably during a 33-ball 56 against Karachi, in which he annihilated the opposition bowling while looking incredibly beautiful. He was called up to Pakistan’s T20I squad for the West Indies trip, and he made his debut at Port of Spain in the second match.
His first three T20Is only yielded 26 runs, and most of the world was still ignorant of his potential when he made his ODI debut in England at the 2017 Champions Trophy a few months later. After missing Pakistan’s opening-match setback to India, Zaman resurrected Pakistan’s batting fortunes with scores of 31, 50, 57, and 114 in his first four ODI innings, his strike rate of 113.00 providing much-needed energy at the top of the order to a dated 50-overs line-up. The first-innings hundred earned him the Player-of-the-Match title in the final, setting up a total of 338 that India couldn’t match.
