Sarfaraz Ahmed is a wicketkeeper batsman who, like many other talented cricketers in Pakistan’s domestic circuit, could have faded into obscurity. Instead, he became the first Pakistan skipper to win a 50-over global title since the legendary Imran Khan.
Sarfaraz Ahmed took over as ODI captain in February 2017, giving his team an unique sense of direction and concentration. In June of that year, Pakistan entered the Champions Trophy as the lowest-ranked side, losing badly to India to begin with, but then going on a tear to defeat South Africa, Sri Lanka, hosts England, and India to win the tournament.
Sarfaraz Ahmed, a right-handed middle-order batsman, wasn’t always the sprightly figure who commanded the Sharjah Test in 2014, when Pakistan chased down 302 in 57.3 overs to tie the series. Sarfraz had only played four Tests, four Twenty20 Internationals, and 26 One-Day Internationals between his debut in 2007 and 2014. He wasn’t good enough to be a regular in any of Pakistan’s sides, and certainly not good enough to deserve a spot as a specialist batsman; in all this time, he hadn’t hit an international half-century. It was a time when the Akmals had taken out a lease on the land behind the stumps, and there were three of them.
Sarfaraz had first caught Pakistan’s attention when he led Pakistan’s Under-19s to the 2006 World Cup victory, striking half-centuries in his third and fourth matches. He began his cricket career in domestic cricket, where he scored 523 runs in ten matches and was dismissed 28 times behind the wickets, propelling him onto the A team’s tour of Australia in 2007. Then he was abandoned in the middle of nowhere.
Sarfaraz returned to the limelight after a seven-year absence, when he scored 74 in Pakistan’s third-innings total of 359 against Sri Lanka in Dubai. Although the innings was lost, it cemented his position as the team’s first-choice wicketkeeper.
