Kieran Powell is a left-handed opening batsman who began playing cricket at the age of eight. Both he and his brother, Alan, have represented the Leeward Islands at the Under-15 and Under-19 levels, while Kieran has gone on to play for the West Indies at the U-19 level. He represented Nevis at the 2006 Stanford 20/20 tournament and took his attacking approach to the 2008 U-19 World Cup in Malaysia, where he was impressed with his aggressive stroke-play, which netted him 253 runs at a strike rate of 124.
He was part of a weakened West Indies ODI squad for the next year’s home series against Bangladesh but was dismissed for a golden duck on debut. During the 2011 season, he was named to the Test team against India, replacing Ramnaresh Sarwan, who was out of form. Powell was in and out of the national team for two years before a run of bad performances led to his dismissal following the Kingston Test against New Zealand in June 2014. Powell played for Sri Lanka’s Tamil Union Cricket & Athletic Club in the first-class competition from February to March 2015
Powell released a statement in January 2015, claiming that contradictory signals from West Indies cricket officials had left him “deflated and bewildered” as he sought to return to international cricket following a self-imposed sabbatical. As a result, he decided to take a break from the game for a while. He tried his hand at baseball in January 2016 but had little success.
Powell returned to cricket in early 2016, playing for the Leeward Islands in the regional 50-over competition, where he scored over 500 runs at an average of 64.12 and was recalled to the West Indies ODI team for the three-match series against England in February 2017. He only scored 16 runs in those matches, but he was retained in the limited-overs squad for the series against Pakistan and Afghanistan. Powell was recalled to the Test team against Pakistan in April 2017. Powell produced three 30-plus scores during that tour, and he was named to the Test team for the England tour in July of that year.
