Dominic Mark Bess (born 22 July 1997) is an English cricketer who now represents Yorkshire County Cricket Club and the England national team. Bess moved to Somerset from Sidmouth, Devon, when he was 16 years old. In 2015, he spent some time at Darren Lehmann’s Adelaide academy. He credits his spin bowling career to the shorter run-up necessary compared to fast bowling, saying, “I was always a little porker when I was younger, so I never did the long run-up.” “I always trotted in after five or six steps.” In his youth, he was an avid rugby player who played fly-half, and he credits former Somerset fitness coach Darren Veness with helping him develop his strength and conditioning.
Dominic Bess was out shopping with his partner when England’s chairman of selectors, Ed Smith, called to inform him that he had been selected for the home series against Pakistan. Dom Bess is a 20-year-old off-spinner with 16 first-class games to his belt. When Bess made his first-class debut against Pakistan in 2016, he had questionable statistics of none for 128. But then he made his Somerset debut, taking 6 for 21 against Warwickshire in the Championship. Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott, both former England internationals, were among his targets. In the next game, he followed it up with another fifer. Bess, who hails from a tiny Devon county, has also represented England at the under-19 level, and owing to the excellence of his offies, he was given the opportunity to train at the Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy in Adelaide for the 2015/16 season.
