Andrew Tye, a latecomer to state cricket, made his debut for Western Australia in the state one-day competition at the age of 26 and ended second in the tournament wicket tally with 13 at 19.30. Tye was also a formidable T20 player for the Perth Scorchers, with his propensity to hit yorkers at the end of innings making him extremely effective in both forms. He was chosen in Australia’s Twenty20 team in early 2016, making his international debut at the age of 29 and was named in the squad for the World T20 in India, owing to his ability with the white ball.
Tye, as his statistics demonstrate, is primarily a limited-overs bowler who thrives on putting pressure on batters, either through his accuracy, the scoreboard, or both. He doesn’t bowl at a high rate, but he is still rather rapid, and Tye’s success is down to his smart pace changes, which can perplex batsmen, especially when they try to increase the ante. All of these has helped Tye establish himself as a dependable slog-overs bowler in Australia’s domestic circuit. He’s demonstrated it several times in the BBL, when he’s used his skill to suffocate batters.Apart from his bowling, Tye is a capable batsman in the lower order, with a knack for hitting huge sixes. All of this makes him a valuable package in shorter forms, especially T20s.
Regardless of his domestic accomplishments, Tye will understand that they will be meaningless if he is unable to complete the task in national colours. He’ll want to be consistent in T20s and, in time, establish a reputation for himself in ODIs. Tye’s knuckle ball has been a craze among limited-overs bowlers in recent years, and few bowlers can execute it better than he can.
