Cricketer Akila Dananjaya Perera plays all forms of the game for the Sri Lankan national team. For the first time in history, he took three wickets and was hit for six sixes in the same over against the West Indies in March 2021.
People in Sri Lanka are well known for their unconventional spinners. In that list, Dananjaya is currently at the top. Untried in first-class cricket, Dananjaya was selected for the T20 World Cup 2012. It was Mahela Jayawardene who convinced selectors to fast-track the youngster to the national side because of his ability to control the googly, the carrom ball, the leg-break, the doosra, and the off-spinner. Despite only playing four games, Dananjaya picked up seven wickets at an average of 13 and an economy rate of 6.
His career ended after just one more game. For the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh, he was also passed over. Due to Dananjaya’s success in 2013’s T20 World Cup, he was purchased by Chennai Super Kings for $20,000.
In Sri Lankan cricket, Dhananjaya was unable to establish himself in the national team due to the revolving door policy. Aside from a few T20Is, he was completely ignored by the national selectors for the next four years. During the 2017 home season, he was recalled to the national team and immediately made an impact, recording a career-best four for 47 against the Zimbabweans. Against India two days after his marriage, he scored six for 54, securing his place in the team for the near future.
